Arla Bio Milk
Arla Germany is buttering up consumers with claims of “more sustainable cartons” for its organic meadow milk — but the messaging skims over minor packaging tweaks while ignoring the hefty environmental footprint of dairy production.
Arla in Germany launched what is claims to be more sustainable cartons for its organic meadow milk using the strapline ‘Time for a change’. The Pure-Pak carton has one less layer of coating and uses less materials and chemicals in its production. The cartons are made from 77% paper board from wood and 23% plant-based polymers through mass balancing.
This focus on packaging, a component Arla itself acknowledges constitutes less than 5% of its total carbon footprint is misleading. It distracts environmentally conscious consumers from the overwhelmingly large environmental impact of dairy farming including methane emissions, land and water use.
