Ready to drink products switch to paper straws

Nestlé’s “eco” paper straws are paper-thin greenwash, masking the dairy-ing truth about its emissions.

Nestlé Pakistan’s brands including Nesvita and Milo switched to using paper straws made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper, removing over  400 million plastic straws.
The minor environmental benefit of removing plastic straws is overshadowed by the substantial emissions generated from Nestlé’s dairy and livestock ingredients, which constitute 30% of its Scope 3 emissions. Despite this, Nestlé’s social media marketing, including slogans like “choose paper straws for the planet,” may lead environmentally conscious consumers to believe their purchase is making a significant positive impact. The environmental benefits of paper straws is also debatable, with some research indicating they may contain persistent and potentially harmful chemicals.
