Arla Skyr yoghurt
Arla’s switch to 100% recycled plastic for its Skyr pots may look like a feel-good climate fix, but it’s a spoonful of distraction that glosses over the far bigger environmental footprint of dairy production.
Arla introduced what it claims to be more sustainable packaging for its Skyr 450g yoghurts. The pots are made with 100% recycled plastic (excluding the seal and sleeve) and the plastic lids have been removed. To recycle, consumers need to separate the paper sleeve and plastic foil from the cup (See video).
The focus on recycled plastic and packaging distracts the consumer from the real environmental impacts of this dairy product. Dairy farming significantly impacts the environment. The industry’s practices, particularly methane production from cows, land use for feed production, and waste management, have serious environmental impacts. The FAO estimates that livestock production contributes 12% to global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. In the UK, approximately 50% of the total GHG emissions by UK agriculture are due to methane produced by dairy farms.
