READY FOR LANDFILL

These shorts, featured in Boohoo’s “Ready for the Future” collection, are marketed as sustainable because they include recycled polyester—plastic made from downcycled bottles. But this sustainability claim doesn’t hold up. Recycled polyester cannot be efficiently recycled back into high-quality clothing, and the sweatpants are made from a polyester-cotton blend—a combination that recycling technologies have yet to process effectively on a commercial scale.

Far from being ready for the future, these shorts are ready for landfill or incineration at the end of their use, contributing to mounting textile waste and microplastic pollution.

Boohoo’s take on “sustainability” comes at a suspiciously low cost—these sweatpants are priced at just £3, a stark reminder of the environmental and social costs the planet bears for cheap, disposable fashion.
