Cathedral City’s eco-claims don’t cut the cheese

By partnering with TerraCycle, Cathedral City claims an eco-friendly edge, but the reality is more complex. Consumers face inconvenient recycling steps, while Saputo, Cathedral City’s parent company, continues to be a big methane emitter — focusing on greenwashing instead of meaningful action.

Cathedral City new supposedly ‘recyclable packaging’ is little more than greenwashing, by partnering with TerraCycle, a company that collaborates with leading polluters under the guise of sustainability, it’s masking the true impact of both its product and wrapper.

Terracycle is no stranger to Greenwash.com, it promotes products as being “recyclable,” but consumers often have to drive to drop-off points or mail items in—making it inconvenient and frankly unlikely to happen without any incentives (like a proper packaging deposit based recycling system would).

Saputo, Cathedral City’s parent company, is also a previous friend of Greenwash.com, and this is just another attempt to hides its history of pollution and huge emissions which in 2021 were reported to be 18.1 MtCO₂e—higher than the entire emissions of Cambodia (16.96 MtCO₂e).
