How2Recycle labeling programme
The How2Recycle® programme is a standardised labelling system that provides consumers with instructions as to what types of packaging can be recycled. However, programmes such as these are used by industry as a convenient way to distract consumers from the growing waste crisis and to shift blame onto the individuals.
In addition, the How2Recycle® programme continues with its corporate communication to consumers about the recyclability of different products and the importance of recycling despite the significant amount of evidence, including internal industry documents, that point out that the industry knew recycling was a limited solution from the start.
The evidence against recycling ranged from the warning that there is no market for recycled plastics to the fact that recycling is not feasible for most multi-material or multi-laminate packages with many of these products not able to be recycled at scale.
