International Dairy Federation

International Dairy Federation claims to be the leading source of scientific and technical expertise for stakeholders in the dairy chain, but its statements on the environment and greenhouse gas emissions mount to little more than greenwashing.

IDF state that “the dairy sector is significantly reducing emissions”, however, closer inspection reveals they actually mean reducing emissions intensity per measurement of milk whilst leaving room for an increase in dairy production, and consequently the sector’s overall emissions.

IDF also use their webpage about the environment as a place to push arguments in defence of dairy, including many overinflated arguments that are used to make livestock rearing seem more sustainable. For example, they state that animal farming uses land efficiently, including marginal lands, but this ignores wider supply chain issues, including that a significant portion of crop land is used to grow animal feed.
