Building a sustainable future?
Arla go heavy on their bold but vague environmental claims on the back of this Lacto Free grated cheddar. They state that ‘the actions [they] take today will support a Stronger Planet’ and that they’re ‘building a sustainable future’.
In reality, Arla emits around 18.9 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions per year (this includes other greenhouse gases such as potent methane gas but is measured in comparison to carbon dioxide) and they process over 90% of Denmark’s milk and two-thirds of Sweden’s. Despite Arla having a stock of 12.1 billion cows, they have no reduction targets for their methane emissions – with methane making up 47% of their GHG emissions. This is far from the sustainable future they claim to be building.
