PLASTIC OVER PLANET
Lululemon promotes its "Be Planet" focus, claiming that its “products and actions avoid environmental harm and contribute to restoring a healthy planet.”
However, a closer look at Lululemon’s products reveals a huge disconnect between Lululemon’s marketing and the actual sustainability of its practices. Despite their claims, 67% of Lululemon’s products are made from synthetic fibres, which are major contributors to microplastic pollution – responsible for 35% of the microplastics found in our oceans. These materials are increasingly detected in human bodies, including in lungs, stomachs, and even brain tissue.
This raises the question: how can Lululemon claim to be avoiding environmental harm while producing garments largely made from fossil fuel-based plastics that persist in nature, further exacerbating pollution? This stark contradiction has led Lululemon to face legal action for greenwashing, initiated by Stand.Earth, highlighting the growing scrutiny over misleading sustainability claims in the fashion industry.
