IKEA to use ocean plastic in new products - MUSSELBLOMMA Collection
IKEA is a participating company of NextWave Plastics, a voluntary initiative which claims to be ‘turning off the tap on plastic pollution by creating the first global network of ocean-bound plastics supply chains’. The MUSSELBLOMMA range from IKEA consists of two cushion covers, a bag and a table cloth. Although these items use recovered fishing nets, making products from ocean plastic does is not an effective measure for preventing discarded nets at source.
Products made from ocean plastic help to perpetuate the myth that more consumption can “solve” problems created by consumption. What’s more, some of these products rely on the use of recycled plastic bottles which are better recycled in a closed-loop, that is back into bottles, than down-cycled into non-essential consumer products.
